Merry X-Mas from Bastogne! On December 22, 1944, during the Battle of the Bulge, four German soldiers approached American lines near Bastogne with white flags, seeking to deliver a written message to the commander. The group included Major Wagner from the 47th Panzer Corps and Lieutenant Hellmuth Henke, who spoke English. Staff Sergeant Carl E. Dickinson escorted them to the command post, blindfolding both officers along the way.

At the command post, Brig. Gen. Anthony C. McAuliffe received their typewritten surrender demand and famously replied with "NUTS!" This reply, delivered to the Germans by Colonel Harper, resulted in confusion as the Germans did not comprehend the American slang.

The "NUTS!" response became legendary as a symbol of defiance during the Battle of the Bulge. The Germans redirected their efforts, leaving Bastogne to the 26th Volksgrenadier Division. The exchange showcased the resilience and determination of the American forces during a critical moment in the war.
